Proxima's IES Global Illumination Award of Interior Lighting Design 2025 - Fairmont Pacific Rim

Proxima Lighting Solutions is pleased to announce that it has received a Global Illumination Award of Merit from Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) for its interior lighting design at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Ballrooms in Vancouver, British Columbia.

About the Project

This interior lighting project focused on the comprehensive upgrade of over 300 large decorative fabric luminaires within Fairmont’s prestigious ballroom. The luminaires ranged in size from 6 to 8 feet and included bowtie, rectangular, and round forms.

A key challenge was executing the work without interrupting the ballroom’s operations, which remained in use for high-profile events throughout the retrofit process.

Design and Features

The lighting control system supports both routine and special event scenarios. It is programmed to reflect seasonal and cultural themes, such as red and green for Christmas or green for St. Patrick’s Day. The system is operated by a trained team and includes remote programming capabilities for major events.

A modular Distributed Control System (DCS) was implemented to manage cabling, drivers, dimmers, relays, and local control panels. It includes real-time and astronomical scheduling to minimize manual intervention and reduce energy consumption.

Sustainability and Safety in Focus

The new luminaires preserved the ballroom’s signature bow-tie silhouette while improving safety, energy efficiency, and material performance. Each shade was crafted with a two-layer fabric system: an inner diffuser for even light distribution and an outer pleated layer for elegance.

All shades were treated with fire-retardant coatings to meet current building codes, and protective measures during production ensured material durability and enhanced safety.

Design-built a set of custom upgraded lightings for ballrooms and the event floor hallway of a high-end Vancouver hotel, enhancing sophistication, ambiance, and functionality.

Recognizing Design Excellence

The Global IES Illumination Awards recognize exceptional contributions to the art and science of lighting design. All submissions were evaluated by a jury of industry professionals with diverse expertise in design, engineering, and application. The ballroom project was recognized for its creative and sustainable approach to a technically challenging retrofit.
